The UK government’s recent decision to cut the international aid budget will have serious national and global consequences, particularly for charities. This announcement coincided with the US government freezing foreign aid for 90 days, raising concerns across the non-profit sector. More than 100 organisations have written to Sir Keir Starmer, urging him to reverse the decision.
The letter shares that UK aid accounts for just over 1p in every £1 of public spending, yet it delivers immense value— providing stability and safety for many marginalised communities and low income countries, which will save the UK money in the long-term. Not only this, but the cuts will mean less funding for humanitarian crises, meaning more people will die unnecessarily. With less support available, charities like ours are under even more pressure to step in and fill the gap, while fundraising demands grow and more organisations will now need voluntary funding.

Now, more than ever, we need your support. We are committed to transparency and to serving those who have nowhere else to turn. Since our founder Graham’s visit to Romania 34 years ago, we have fought for those in desperate need, working to develop access to free palliative care. But rising costs, legislative changes, and political uncertainty make our mission increasingly difficult. We are truly grateful to you, our supporters, who have helped us reach where we are today. If you are able to support a charity, please consider donating to Hospices of Hope . Your generosity will help us continue improving access to palliative care in some of the most vulnerable countries in Europe.
Hospices of Hope has never received any UK government funding for our charitable causes. We understand this as our vital work takes place overseas, we therefore focus on lobbying governments in the countries we support to help fund palliative care and create lasting change. However, in many of these countries there is simply no support and no public funding exists for this type of care. Without it, patients and their families sometimes seek treatment in the UK.
“The UK’s decision to cut international aid is deeply concerning, not just for charities but for the millions who rely on this support. At Hospices of Hope, we witness daily the consequences of underfunded healthcare systems—people suffering needlessly due to a lack of palliative care. While we do not receive UK government funding, these cuts will put even more pressure on charities like ours to bridge the gap. We remain committed to ensuring that those facing terminal illness are not forgotten, but we need public support now more than ever to continue this mission.”
