Help for Ukraine: Two Years On
Saturday 24th February 2024 marks the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the largest attack on a European country since World War 2, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties and tragic consequences for the Ukrainian people. It is estimated that over 600,000 people in Ukraine require palliative care, facing the combined challenge of battling both the war and their debilitating illness.
Our hospice charity partner in Ukraine faces a serious lack of funding. Hospices in Ukraine have relied on government funding to pay medical staff and cover essential costs like utilities and medication. However, due to the war, this funding has been gradually reduced and the Ministry of Health has just announced another 22% cut in funding from April this year. It is a critical time, as prior to the war, there were 19 independent hospices in the country, but now only 5 of those hospices remain, two of which (Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Pallaitive Care Centre and the Nadvirna FIrst Children’s hospice) are our partner hospices.
To address the latest decrease in funding, we are launching this appeal to help the hospices cover the shortfall in funding in order to keep all the hospice beds open and the mobile services running and also to help with essential renovations to their buildings.
Please consider donating to ensure that hospice care remains available for those in need during this difficult time.
Even a small donation can make a big difference to people going through such challenging times. Even better, if you could consider setting up a monthly direct debit payment, this helps us greatly to plan our support in advance.
