What we do

The Hospices of Hope Network includes Hospice Casa Sperantei and Hospice Emanuel in Romania, BELhospice in Serbia, Hospices of Hope Moldova, Ryder Albania in Albania, Merimna and Nosilia in Greece and charity fund St. Panteleimon for the Regional Palliative Care Centre Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine.

Our strategy is to increase access to free hospice care so that everyone suffering from terminal or life-limiting illness in South East Europe receives specialist end of life care when they need it.

Our founder, Graham, speaking at a palliative care conference in Serbia

We provide funding to our country partners but we cannot achieve full access to hospice care simply through finance. So we also provide advocacy, technical expertise and training and work with governments and other agencies to develop national strategies for end of life care.

Our purpose-built hospices in Romania provide best practice in hospice care and medical training and act as models for other organisations to follow. Our new hospice centre in Serbia and the centre in Copaceni for children with life-limiting conditions will set similar standards.

We work with our country partners to achieve reforms in national health legislation or practice.

Medical training

Part of our strategy is to increase knowledge of hospice care among medical professionals. They, in turn, can introduce what they have learnt into their medical practices.

Technical expertise

Guiding in areas such as design, architecture and the implementation of services. In addition, advising each country partner on how to raise funds as charitable giving was virtually unknown in this region.

Advocacy

Equitable funding for hospice services is an issue in all our partner countries and we support our country partners with their lobbying to change this.

Funding

Through applying for trusts and grants and fundraising through our own events, supporters and initiatives, we are able to help our country partners with funding new projects.

You will find more about our country partners in our About Us page.

Our Head office is in Otford, Sevenoaks, Kent and we have an office in Scotland and a sister charity in New York, USA.

Since 1992 we have…

raised the majority of funding required to:

  • build the Princess Diana Palliative Medicine Training Centre in Brasov
  • build the in-patient hospices in Brasov and Bucharest
  • build the children’s centre in Adunatii Copaceni (all run by Hospice Casa Sperantei)
  • build the first hospice centre in Serbia (run by BELhospice)
  • become the leading UK development charity for hospice/palliative in South East Europe
  • facilitate care for more than 70,000 patients and their families through our country partner charities
