A major step forward for hospice care in Moldova
We are delighted to share an important milestone in our work to develop hospice and palliative care in Moldova.
On 25 August 2026, Hospices of Hope Moldova signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova regarding the construction of a new inpatient hospice and palliative care centre. The memorandum was signed by Moldova’s Minister of Health, Alexandru Gasnaș, and Veronica Dragnev-Sacara, Executive Director of Hospices of Hope Moldova.
The agreement represents an important endorsement of the project by the Moldovan Government and is a significant step towards making the new centre a reality.

A new centre for adults and children
The planned hospice centre will have 26 inpatient places – 20 for adults and 6 for children – providing specialist palliative care for people living with advanced, life-limiting illnesses, including cancer.
Alongside medical care, the centre will provide psychological, social and emotional support, helping patients and their families receive care in comfort and with dignity.
The centre will also have an important educational role, providing opportunities for students and healthcare professionals to develop their skills in palliative care. The Ministry has highlighted Hospices of Hope’s experience in developing palliative care services across South-East Europe as an important resource for strengthening professional training and promoting modern standards of care in Moldova.
Building on years of work
Hospices of Hope has been working in Moldova since 2008, supporting the development of palliative care through home-based services and hospice care in Chisinau, as well as teams working in Orhei, Soroca and Bălți.
The new centre represents the next stage of this work – creating a dedicated facility where patients and families can receive specialist care when they need it most.
Hospices of Hope Moldova has been working hard to secure the funding needed to make the capital project possible. The Memorandum of Understanding is particularly significant because it strengthens the project’s position as part of the country’s developing healthcare infrastructure and may help open opportunities to access structural and international funding for the project.
As our Country Manager, Veronica, said, the agreement is a strong endorsement and engagement by the state and will be a valuable tool in our fundraising efforts.
A hopeful step forward
There is still much work to do before the new centre can open, but this agreement marks an important moment for hospice and palliative care in Moldova.
