For Mrs C, aged 80, hospice care means much more than medical treatment. Since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025, she has been receiving support at home from our partner, Emanuel Hospice in Oradea, Romania.

Mrs C is blind and has significantly reduced mobility, making travelling to medical appointments particularly difficult. Regular visits from the hospice team mean she can receive the care and support she needs in the comfort and familiarity of her own home.

Hospice nurse Monica Mrs C’s plays an important role in coordinating her care. Through regular home visits, Monica monitors Mrs C’s wellbeing, provides nursing support and helps her family understand how best to care for her.

But Monica’s role goes beyond medical care. Over time, she has become a familiar and reassuring presence for Mrs C and her family, someone they know they can rely on.

In July 2025, Monica visited Mrs C on her birthday and brought her a small gift. She did the same again the following year. Mrs C was delighted by these simple gestures of kindness and companionship.

For someone who spends much of her time at home, these moments can make a huge difference.

Hospice care is about much more than treating symptoms. It is about helping people feel safe, supported and cared for, and making sure they do not have to face serious illness alone.

Mrs C’s family has a special connection with Emanuel Hospice. Her husband was previously cared for by the hospice and died around seven years ago while receiving their support.

Today, her daughter, son and grandson help to care for Mrs C, providing both practical and emotional support. The hospice team works alongside them, helping the family to navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one with complex needs.

The wider hospice team also provides psychological, social and spiritual support where needed, ensuring that Mrs C’s care is centred around her whole wellbeing, not just her illness.

Mrs C’s story demonstrates the difference that specialist hospice care can make – particularly for people who find it difficult to access services outside their home.

But there are many more people across the region who need this support. Emanuel Hospice is working to complete a new hospice centre in Oradea, creating a dedicated space from which the team can expand its services and support more patients and their families.

Hospices of Hope is supporting this important project and is raising £25,000 to help equip the new centre.
