Elena's Story
Elena* wanted one simple thing: to spend her final days at home.
Surrounded by the people she loved, in familiar surroundings, she did not want to be admitted to hospital. Her devoted husband cared for her tirelessly, determined to honour her wishes. Together, they had already endured profound loss, the tragic death of their 35-year-old son, a heartbreak that remained close to them both.
As Elena’s illness progressed, she became increasingly weak and confined to her bed. In October 2024, she was referred to our hospice partner, who began supporting her at home.
From that moment, a dedicated hospice team looked after Elena and her family. They provided not only medical care, but emotional, practical and spiritual support during an incredibly difficult time.
The hospice team managed her pain and symptoms, helping to keep her comfortable as her condition advanced. They carefully treated her wounds and, through attentive care, were able to heal painful pressure sores that had developed. Each visit brought reassurance that she was not alone, and that her comfort and dignity mattered.
Support extended beyond medical care. A social worker helped the family access financial support, while a psychologist offered space for both Elena and her husband to process the emotional weight of her illness. When Elena became too unwell to cook, volunteers delivered home-cooked meals, prepared with care and thoughtfulness.
Moments of comfort and connection were also found in quieter ways. A chaplain visited to offer spiritual support, and during the Christmas season, volunteers came to sing carols — bringing warmth, peace and a sense of togetherness into the home.
In February 2026, Elena passed away peacefully at home, just as she had wished. Her husband was by her side. Her symptoms were well controlled, and she was surrounded by the familiarity and love that had meant so much to her.
Even after her passing, the hospice team continues to support her husband, offering care and guidance through bereavement.
Elena’s story is a reminder of the difference hospice care can make — ensuring that even in the most difficult moments, people are treated with dignity, compassion and respect, and are able to spend their final days in the place they call home.
